Cammalleri to Montreal
I don’t have any fancy powers to edit threads I didn’t create, so let’s start a new one.
Mike Cammalleri is heading north of the border to Montreal, where apparently salary cap restrictions don’t apply. He got five years at $6M per. Obviously he would have been a great fit for the Blueshirts, but that’s a lot of scratch.
Marian Gaborik is still out there, but he’ll be way more expensive than Cammy would have been. Martin Havlat isn’t going back to Chicago thanks to Marian Hossa’s megadeal, but is the price right?
Update (6:14pm): Mike Komisarek got five years at $4.5M per from the Maple Leafs. Toronto also finalized the Kubina deal, getting Exelby and Colin Stuart from Atlanta for Kubina and Tim Stapleton.
Update 7:00pm: Dave here, thanks Mike for watching out while I was MIA.
Steve Sullivan re-upped with Nashville, 2 years, $3.75 annually.
Steve Begin to the Bruins, 1 year $850k
Sami Pahlsson to CBJ, 3 years, $2.65 annually.
Still no big splash for the Rangers, Gaborik and Havlat still out there.
Update 7:05pm: Chris Neil to make his decision tonight, it’s between the Rangers, Oilers, and Leafs.
If the Rangers sign him to a four year deal, Sather will have officially burned out all his brownie points for dealing Gomez.
Gaborik wants 10/$75 million.
If he gets that deal, what does the over/under start at? 300 games over 10 years? 400?
Update 7:15pm: The Rangers offer to Neil is 4/$8.8 million total.
Update 7:30pm: Matieu Garon to CBJ, 2 years, $1.2 million per.
Update 8:20pm: Gaborik to the Rangers (!!) 5 years, $5.75 million a year (!!!) Great deal! 5 years, $7.5 mil a year. Still a good deal.
Gionta reunited with Gomez in Montreal, 5 years, $25 million.
Neil staying in Ottawa (whew) 4 years, $8 million.

Like I said in the previous thread, Gaborik or bust.
By Dave, July 1, 2009 @ 6:08 pm
Definitely not the thing I wanted to read on the train. Ugh.
Ill fix that access glitch when I get home.
By Dave, July 1, 2009 @ 6:13 pm
Jordan, looks like it is Gabby or bust.
By Dave, July 1, 2009 @ 6:42 pm
Mike, I updated your access, you should be able to edit posts now.
I clicked the wrong type of access way back when. My bad.

I don’t get the Chris Neil thing at all. If anything, I could see a Brashear-Neil thing where they offer a contract to both guys, and take whoever signs first while the other guy loses out. But both?

Sather wants to have the most expensive 4th line in history.
Neil-Boyle-Brashear
By Jordan, July 1, 2009 @ 7:32 pm
It’s really frustrating seeing a great trade happen and then no corresponding move when the whole point was to free up cap room to sign someone who could score more than 20 goals a year.
Gaborik would be good, but he’s expensive and more cost efficient relatively similar options were available.
But Brashear, ugh. I hope Andrew Gross or Rick Carpiniello or someone can just ask Sather straight up “In all seriousness, what are you thinking there, making that deal?”

Tanguay is still out there…but not if Neil signs.

Mike,
Mike Stanton/Chris Hammond type deal? Hah.

Heh, don’t forget Mark Guthrie. But that’s the idea. Offer both guys the same contract, whoever blinks first wins. Or loses depending on your perspective.

Except Neil got offered $700K more in his offer sheet.

I know, but I’m just saying that’s the kind of situation I would have preferred to see play out. Instead of trying to sign both.

Most expensive 4th line in history.

At this point the Rangers are going to be forced to over pay for Heatly.
I love Gaborik’s skills, but he’s hurt every time you turn around…
I guess we are counting on Drury to be as good as he was with the sabres and Cally/Dubi to be 25+ goal scorers.
This Gomez deal is starting to look a little worse than we thought.

The Gomez deal is still fine by me, but the Brashear/Neil combo is what is killing me. They need the cap room to get a scorer. Tanguay may wind up in Blue. I hope.

Looks like it’s 5yrs, 7.5 per, that’s hefty for an injury prone scorer, but he’s a scorer non the less

And I choke again on my iced tea as the initial report is incorrect.
7.5 mil per now.

Thanks for the update Jordan.

No problem. I literally refreshed Darren Dreger’s Twitter within seconds after he updated and almost choked on my iced tea.
