It’s Noon, Time for Fun
Well, the noon bell has rung, and free agency has begun.
I swear, I didn’t mean for that to rhyme.
Don’t miss the post below this one about Yours Truly contributing to Puck Prospectus.
Anyway, the Sedins resigned with Vancouver. That happened before noon, but I wanted to put some space between posts. 5 years, $6.1 million per year, each.
Update 12:06pm: Rangers still interested in Heatley, as per Bob McKenzie.
Update 12:23pm: Mattias Ohlund to TB, 7 years, $3.75 million annually. This sets the market for defensemen. That’s a lot of years for Ohlund. I guess he will help transition Hedman. It’s a front loaded contract, with just $1 million annually for the final two years of the contract. Those two years were added to bring the cap hit down.
Update 12:45pm: Hossa going to Chicago is all but done.
Update 12:46pm: Dvorak resigned with Florida, 2 years, $1.7 million per.
Update 12:52pm: Lunch time, back in an hour. Enjoy the Havlat to CBJ rumor, and Biron to EDM rumor.
Update 2:00pm: Back from lunch. Orr to Toronto, 4 years, $4 million. Good for him.
Booth back to Florida, 6 years $25.5 million.
Hossa to Chicago, terms being finalized. 12 years, $5.2 million cap hit ($62 million, front loaded, $53 million in first 7 years $59.3 million in first 8 years).
Kane-Toews-Hossa. Yikes.
Kubina trade to Atl still being finalized.
I missed a lot in an hour.
Update 2:10pm: Craig Anderson to the Avs, 2 years, $3.8 million total. Ty Conklin to St. Louis, 2 years, $2.6 million.
Update 2:30pm: Dwayne Roloson to the Islanders, 2 years, $5 million. Guess DiPietro is worse off than initially thought. How’s that 15 year deal working out so far?
Update 2:45pm: Donald Brashear to the Rangers. Ugh. We let Orr go to replace him with Brashear? I feel dirty. Guess this means Blair Betts is gone.
2:55pm: Mike Knuble to Washington, two years, $2.8 million a year. Risky giving someone over 35 a multi year deal. Brashear gets $700,000 a year for two years.
Good to know Orr is gone over $300,000 a year.
Make that 2 years, $1.4 million per year. Why is Orr gone? He wanted less money. This makes no sense. Why? Someone? Bueller?
Update 3:05pm: You know, I’m a huge advocate of never booing someone on your team. But I may just break this for Brashear.
Scott Niedermayer to Anaheim, duh.
Update 3:30pm: Did I mention how much I abhor Donald Brashear?
Update 3:50pm: Jaroslav Spacek to Boston Montreal, 3 years $11.5 million. Ouch. I thought they were trying to resign Kessel? I butchered that one.
Rangers made an offer to Chris Neil. What is this? 3rd liner day? Get some scoring Slats.
Update 4:05pm: Khabibulin to Edmonton (4 years $15 million, Cole to Carolina.
Update 4:25pm: Brian Boucher back to Philly.
The Bulin signing to Edmonton clogs up some cap room for Heatley. I don’t know if they are still in the running for him now.
Update 4:35pm: Scott Clemmenson to Florida, 3 years, $3.6 million.
Update 4:40pm: The TSN feed just crapped out on me. Is this available elsewhere?
Ian Lapierreire (butchered that one) to Philly, 3 years, $3.5 million. How can they afford all this?
Update 4:50pm: Rangers no longer in the Heatley running. With Gomez gone, Dubinsky is a deal breaker.
Pittsburgh signed Mike Rupp (2 years, $825K per), Hal Gill to the Habs (2 years, $4.5 mil).
Rangers offer Chris Neil a four year deal. Who is going to score? What are you doing Sather? You are losing all that good faith you got when dealing Gomez.
Update 5:00pm Ok, five day weekend time. I’ll be back with you in about 90 minutes. In the mean time, I’m asking Mike Axisa to update this with any Ranger news (if he’s around). If not, well, I’ll be back soon.

Cammalleri will probably get $5 million a year. He’s the guy I want, speed and skill.
By Dave, July 1, 2009 @ 12:51 pm
Bob Dole likes your style?
By Mike Axisa, July 1, 2009 @ 1:04 pm
Any thoughts on Marc-Andre Bergeron? He’d fill that glaring need of a PP QB.
Dave Reply:

He’d fit in for that role, but he’s terrible defensively.
Great shot off that point though. He has a rocket.
If Roszival ever learns to shoot, he’d be the QB.

Orr to the Leafs, four years, $4M.
Dave Reply:

Good for him. That’s overpaying, but good for him.

I’d rather give 1M a year Orr than 1 cent to Donald Brashear, which is being reported in a few places…
By Dave, July 1, 2009 @ 2:55 pm
Sather just spit in Blair Betts’ face.

Definitely not a fan of that move. But I guess it could always be worse.
Dave Reply:
July 1st, 2009 at 3:29 pm
That move was awful. It definitely ranks up there in worst signings ever.
But yea, it could be worse. This spells the end of the Aaron Voros era in New York.

How so? Brashear has less skill than Orr, and if they were just going for enforcer value, Orr is better at that also.
Oh, did I mention that Orr is 400k cheaper?
Oh, and 10 years, yes TEN YEARS YOUNGER!
Dave Reply:
July 1st, 2009 at 3:31 pm
He could have been making more than $1.4 million a year.
He could have been making $6.5 million….oh wait…
By Adam, July 1, 2009 @ 4:07 pm
After sather showed some potential yesterday he goes and lets orr go to pick up brashear for 400k more a year??? dude
Dave Reply:
July 1st, 2009 at 4:08 pm
They should do co-GMs, Sather handles trades, Schoenfeld handles signings.
MaddMatt Reply:
July 1st, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Seriously, as good as Sather is at moving players, he is equally as bad signing and judging talent…
Oh, and what’s all the interest for Chris Neil?
Dave Reply:
July 1st, 2009 at 4:29 pm
I think it’s because Sather hasn’t fulfilled his quota of 2 overpaid 3rd liners who can’t score.
By MaddMatt, July 1, 2009 @ 4:33 pm
The Rangers need to secure a big time scorer to improve this offense…
Dave Reply:
July 1st, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Gaborik, Havlat and Camalleri have yet to sign. Heatley still on the block.
With Gomez gone, I don’t think they can put Dubinsky in the deal now. That really scares me, because I don’t know what Sather is thinking now.

Haha seriously….the longer it goes the more of a bad feeling I get.
By Jordan, July 1, 2009 @ 4:36 pm
Orr > Brashear.
WTF Sather. WTF.
Dave Reply:
July 1st, 2009 at 4:38 pm
At least it wasn’t a $6 million mistake, if that’s any consolation.
I really hate Brashear.
Jordan Reply:
July 1st, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Not really. Think about how angry we all were when Betts was taken out a few months ago and now we have to root for this guy? So he can be just as dirty to someone else? No thank you.
Dave Reply:

My sentiments exactly, but I’m a silver lining kind of guy.
By Dave, July 1, 2009 @ 4:54 pm
FYI, I bolded the Ranger moves, to make them easier to find.
By MaddMatt, July 1, 2009 @ 5:02 pm
Seriously, if the Rangers sign Neil, trading Gomez looks freaking retarded.
Dave Reply:
July 1st, 2009 at 5:03 pm
They need a scorer, they got enough grit / toughness with Boyle and Brashear.
I’m out for 90 mins while I go home.
By Jordan, July 1, 2009 @ 5:04 pm
So Dubinsky’s the sticking point for Heatley? I don’t know, the guy has scored over 40 goals average for the past three years. If we can get rid of one of our mammouth D-men contracts in the trade, it might be better off.
Dave Reply:
July 1st, 2009 at 7:15 pm
If you trade Dubinsky, who plays center?
By MaddMatt, July 1, 2009 @ 5:20 pm
Um….Cammillari to MTL according to tsn.ca, dear god this Gomez trade is looking worse and worse…
Dave Reply:
July 1st, 2009 at 7:16 pm
Apparently he went there because Gomez was there.
That hurts.
By Jordan, July 1, 2009 @ 5:45 pm
Gaborik or bust.

He wants 10 years, $75 million.
