Quick News/Notes

Well, I had a great 4th of July, which meant I wasn’t around a computer, nor did I want to be around a computer, so I couldn’t update the blog. I think you all managed to survive, I didn’t get any angry emails.

Anyway, a few quick notes:

  • Rick Nash signed a long term deal to stay in Columbus until he turned 33, at a $7.8 million cap hit. That’s market value, he puts up the same numbers as Gaborik.
  • Ryan Smyth was traded to LA for Kyle Quincey, Tom Preissing and a 5th round pick in 2010. That was rumored for a while, not surprising that it went through. Expect Smyth to put up good numbers playing with Kopitar.
  • Mikael Samuelsson signed with Vancouver, 3/$7.5 million ($2.5 million cap hit). I think his numbers were a product of Detroit, so it will be interesting to see how he does.
  • The qualifying offer debacle in Chicago appears to be a dead issue. It doesn’t look like the players will be headed to unrestricted free agency. It would have been cool to see the Rangers take a run at Versteeg if they did though.

amazing how the ryan smyth trade to the islanders a couple years back signified disaster for both groups. smyth has been nowhere near the elite player he used to be and can’t stay healthy and the isles went back to being the isles

they really shouldve worked something out with edmonton when they had the chance…it was a match made in heaven for both groups

    Dave Reply:

Well, the prospects the Islanders gave up really didn’t amount to much either. Nilsson and O’Marra (and the 1st rounder, Plante) haven’t done anything yet.

It was just one of those washes I guess.

the trade itself was a wash…but smyth hasn’t amounted to much since leaving edmonton i think emotionally it just really took its toll on him

maybe its more of a coincidence that the isles became so shitty again

If he was that attached, why not resign there?
