Actually, the Flyers will be on the hook for Pronger's contract. At least according to Bill Daly.

I don't see the NHLPA going for restrictions in the sense of "you can't sign a deal longer than XX years". I can, however, see them accepting some sort of clause mentioned above, as it doesn't really prevent them from signing lucrative deals during their prime.

It's GMs, not owners, that make the deals. Most owners just pay the bills and collect the profit (see: Dolan, James).

Wow, for some reason, I don't remember the cap growing that much after the lockout, my bad.

Either way, I don't think the NHLPA will go for term restrictions. Why can't the owners just control themselves?

Ovechkin is a $9.5 million cap hit, he doesn't apply to these long term front loaded deals, which is what the main issue is (I used a poor example).

The cap has grown by almost $20 million since its inception. Remember, it was at $39 million for the 2005-2006 season. The economic crisis has an affect on everything in the world.

Would Washington have locked up Ovie if they couldn't spread a boat load of money over 10 years?

If the answer is no, then you wouldn't want to see it happen, because you like seeing that 'homegrown' talent stay in the city who drafted him.

But, look at Hossa's contract, raise your hand if you really believe he will play every year of it...

Then again, will the players agree to it? They already have a cap which barely grows, so term limits would restrict their earnings even more.
