Dubinsky Talks with Steve Zipay

After their morning skate, Steve Zipay caught up with the still unsigned Brandon Dubinsky and talked about his future. I’m not going to rehash the entire thing here, but the one thing I noticed was he hesitated when asked if he was ready to play for the qualifying offer of $698,000.

I mention this because while we all yell at Glen Sather for not signing Dubinsky, negotiations are a two-way street. I wonder what his camp is asking for in terms of a contract. Personally, I feel giving him a contract on par with Ryan Callahan’s, while it may be overpaying a bit, is worth it. Spending $9 million on your top two centers balances out the Chris Drury contract.

Of course, you have to consider the length of the deal too, in which you may see Dubinsky get fewer years and less money to still be arbitration eligible, which appears to be what he wants. Then again, the exact opposite could happen, with Dubinsky getting a three or four year deal for a higher average payout than what we expected, to buy out those arbitration years.

So basically, to sum up, no one knows anything.

This thing is going on too long—The Rangers should trade dubi for Kessel or Heatley and stop playing around. The sun will shine without Dubi so lets end this torture which has gone on and on. Tell Sather to get off his A– and move him.

Kessel is hurt out till Dec…Heatley is a head case…. keep Dubi..we need homegrown talent.

The interview made me feel better about the situation..seems like both sides want it to happen…just a matter of getting the numbers right.

Dubi grew up a huge Ranger fan…his dad is from Wrong island.

Wrong Island must be so bad, his dad moved all the way to Alaska! geez…..

Dubinsky will be under contract and playing. I actually like the reluctance to play on the qualifier because if he has the season he’s capable of having that could cost us alot next summer.

I’d rather give him 3 years even if it has to be slightly overpaid at this point (2.5m?) because he’ll be a bargain in 2 years time at that kind of rate.

Thats one thing Detroit has always done well in the past. Look at the contract Zetterberg was playign on when he really broke out. He was a top player in the league, 80+ pt guy and earned 3m!

For me the cap era isnt about how much you spend but its about ‘bang for your buck’.
