The first round of cuts came today, and the Rangers trimmed the roster by 20:

PLAYERS ASSIGNED TO HARTFORD (AHL) ON 9/17/09:

Goal: Miika Wiikman

Defense: Trevor Glass, Brent Henley, Sam Klassen, Mike Sauer, David Urquhart, Nigel Williams

Forwards: Andres Ambuhl, Daniel Bartek, Devin DiDiomete, Brodie Dupont, Dan LaCouture, Matt Maccarone, Justin Soryal, Dale Weise

PLAYERS RETURNED TO JUNIORS ON 9/17/09:

Goal: Scott Stajcer (Owen Sound, OHL)

Defense: Tomas Kundratek (Medicine Hat, WHL)

Forwards: Ryan Bourque (Quebec, QMJHL), Roman Horak (Chilliwack, WHL), Ethan Werek (Kingston, OHL)

Most of these names shouldn’t really surprise anyone, especially the kids sent back to Juniors. What does surprise me is that Mike Sauer was sent back so quickly. Most of us had him pegged as a possibility for the 6th/7th spot due to his massive +/- last season with Hartford. He played a steady preseason game against Boston as well. The Maccarone-stache will be missed. What an awesome mustache.

The roster is down to 34 now. It’s a safe bet that if Bobby Sanguinetti doesn’t get his act together real fast, he’s on the next round of cuts. Matt Gilroy is a Ranger, leaving two spots for Sanguinetti, Corey Potter, Alexei Semenov, and Michael Del Zotto. If I had to guess, I’d say that Potter and Semenov will fight it out for those two roles, while Sanguinetti is sent to Hartford and Del Zotto is returned to the OHL.
