Memo to Sather: Avoid 2010 UFAs, Wait for 2011

With the signings of Patrick Marleau and Tomas Plekanec, the UFA market for 2010 went from thin to bare. There are very few big time UFA’s available, and each will certainly be overpaid this summer as a result. The summer of 2010 will be the summer to be a UFA, big contracts from teams with oodles of cap room await those who hit the market.

Maybe it is a blessing in disguise that the Rangers have no cap room to work with this summer. I found myself looking ahead to 2011, and I must say, it is one of the best free agent classes I have ever seen. The list includes Brad Richards, Chara, Jovanovski, Thornton, Lidstrom, Giguere, Semin, Markov, McCabe, Vokoun, Gagne, St. Louis, Patrice Bergeron, Connolly, Brewer, Kaberle, Bryzgalov, Mikko Koivu, Ehrhoff, Hejduk, and Backes.

That is one hell of a list. Currently, the Rangers have just 8 players committed to contract when the summer of 2011 hits, and $22 million in cap space to work with. With that many UFAs set to hit the free agency, it would be the ultimate buyers market, thus bringing prices way down. The top notch guys will get their money, but the aging veterans who put up consistent numbers will see their salary demands take a big hit. This class is comparable to the 2009 MLB free agent class, which featured Sabathia, Teixeira, etc.

you guys with this rangers cap thing they have 13 mill plus when they dump redden in the minors and they will they have almost 20 mill.there are alot of teams worse off than ours go to capgeek and see we are in fine shape. staal will get about 3 mill this year and girardi and getting nuch more then last year so if he gets 2.5 mill.figure these numbers on capgeek and you see we are in good shape you morons.

    Dave Reply:

Staal will get $4-$4.5 million based on market value. Girardi will get $3 million.

    Dave Reply:

And Redden is not being dumped. I’ve talked about that so many times, it’s frustrating to have to re-hash it every day.

    brian Reply:

that would be especially frustrating with the knicks spending 3m to buy a fucking second round draft pick that will be their 12th man

    Dave Reply:

Yea, the Dolans are spending their time on Lebron, not the Rangers.

sorry im just so fed up with hearing this rangers cap crunch thing with the rangers.

  • By jerry, June 24, 2010 @ 4:42 pm

here i did it for ya.line 1 zuccarello-?-gaborik.line 2- gravchev if ready- dubinsky-callahan.third line-avery-drury-prust.line 4 shelley- anisimov- byers.defence 1 staal-volchenchov.defence2 girardi-delzotto defence3-rozival-gilroy.goalies lundquivst – johnson.this line up looks good gets younger and gives a raise to 3 mil for staal 2.5 to girardi and sign volchebchov for 5 mill a year.resign shelley and prust for the same money.thats a payroll of 52,180,000 and guess what leaves us 8,715,000 to sign a first line center wow look at that.

    Dave Reply:

You think MZA will make the team? You think he’s a good first liner? He will be in the AHL to start the year.

Grachev didn’t even put up 30 points last year in the AHL, and you have him on the 2nd line? He’s back in the AHL this year.

Volchenkov already turned down an offer of $5 million a year, he will get more than that.

Redden is going to be on the team. He is not getting waived. Deal with it.

    jerry Reply:

its a thought to see how it can work and yes mza will be on the team bet on it .and i said gravchev was a question mark.

    brian Reply:

if MZA is being counted on for first line rangers are in BIG trouble

  • By jerry, June 24, 2010 @ 5:57 pm

and volchenchov isnt getting more then 5 mill a year.

    brian Reply:

hes getting 5m a year minimum, def not worth it, your an idiot jerry

    Dave Reply:

    No need for name calling.

  • By jerry, June 24, 2010 @ 6:08 pm

and even if we dont dump redden we still have 6,460,833 left and if gravchev isnt ready thats still plenty of money.and with my line up with your totals for girardi and staal. so you could argue the fact all day but in the end the numbers speak for themselfs.

    brian Reply:

    you. are. wrong.

  • By Dave, June 25, 2010 @ 9:33 am

Currently $13m in cap room. Resign Staal to $4m (low end) and Girardi to $3m (high end). That leaves $6m in cap space. Resign Prust, Shelley, Christensen, and a backup goalie – $4 million probably total.

Where is this cap space you speak of?

    jerry Reply:

do the numbers on capgeek you moron your the retard its easy just put the players in and wow the number pops up a….hole.

    jerry Reply:

and its just suggestions that can work. but i know everybody else is wrong but you idiots.

    Section 121 Reply:

Here’s an idea; we need a left wing!…
and Frolov looks like the best UFA option – give him 4M over 4 (like ATL gave Antropov)
Sign Christensen for 3 over 2
    Sign Prust for 1
    Sign Shelley for 1
    Sign Stall for 5
    Sign Girardi for 3

Dump Redden (which Torts alluded to end of season, Sather will go along seeing how Torts knows all, haha)
    Dump Voros
    Brash is already dumped
    Move up Sanguinetti
    Move up Weise
Keep Johnson down to keep him playing
Sign one of many available backups for 1

(All these amounts are on the high side knowing Sather’s/Dolan’s spending history)

All this equates to approx 55M cap hit (59.4M limit)

And now Torts plays his players in their natural positions (Drury was on Briere’s wing in Buffalo during his best years)

    and the line up looks like;

    Frolov, Duby, Gabby
    Drury, Christensen, Cally
    Avery, Anisimov, Prust
    Shelley, Boyle, Weise

    Stall, Rozy
    Griradi, MDZ
    Gilroy, Sanguinetti

    Give Duby the “A”
When Drury leaves next year, give duby “C” and give him extension early

btw Grachev is a center and not ready and MZA can take Drury’s place after next year; Also, Grachev can replace Anisimov or Christensen next year if they aren’t working out and he’s the real thing

Duby will have his best year yet if the top line center (25, 40) – his career will be stunted if played on the second line wing all year with doubts (20, 20 again).

Let’s try to be more consistent than torts’ lines…

    jerry Reply:

did you do it on capgeek you drop voros brashear and use all the players i listed and wow the computer does it for ya and like i said its just what could be .

    Dave Reply:

You can’t drop Brashear, he has a 35+ contract, so his cap hit is always there.

I have no insulted you at all, but you show your immaturity by insulting me.
