Vinny Prospal was the Rangers alternate captain last year, and had a great year, putting up a line of 20-38-58. The 35 year old foward play wing and center, and meshed well with Marian Gaborik.
Prospal isn’t the best defensive player, but he plays hard, and scores goals. The Rangers need that. He proved to be a great presence in the locker room, and was well-respected.
Prospal was a bargain last year. He only made $1.1 million. Still, with his age, I wouldn’t expect that to go much higher.
The problem with re-signing Prospal is that you’re bringing back essentially the same team as last year. Which, if you take away the middle 40 games, wasn’t a bad team. But, you can’t take away those games. They underachieved, and if you bring back Prospal, you’re not sending a great message to your fans.
If they re-sign Vinny, here’s what the lines could look like:

Avery-Christensen-Callahan
Prust-Anisimov-Shelley
Weise-Drury-Boyle

“If you take away the middle 40 games…” – I laughed at that.
I don’t think Prospal is back because he will want a multi year deal, and I’m sick of 35+ contracts.
i think he returns for a 1 year deal around 2m.
Considering we need scoring at a reasonable price on short(er) term deals i dont see why people have an issue with him coming back?
And if he did return, doesnt mean he’d be the only UFA arriving.
hes probably the best center on the market behind koivu and maybe lombardi, so he will not settle for something like 1 year 2 mil, he can significantly more than that
both boyle and christensen should be gone .on boyle for a guy thats that big he hits noone and is pretty useless.as for christensen i dont know i dont think hes a first line center as well as dubinsky.and prospal he gave a lot for a little last year but if your gonna go with lets do it all the way and suffer now and hopefully get the later payoff. just a thought.

Prospal would be a good stopgap if the young kids aren’t ready to step in. I think AA is going to center Gaborik this year though.
Shelley is as good as gone..Weise, Grachev and Stepan may make the team depending on camp…Rangers want to go with youth so I doubt Vinny will be signed (besides isn’t he now on his “off year”)..
I think they want him back, but he’s pricing himself out of NY.
why does it seem like the Rangers prospects (MDZ aside) take 4-5 years to develop and most other teams kids step in right away and play well? Dubi and Cally are good but not great..They need more than 19-20 goals a year from those two if they want to be considered top 6 forwards..

The kid is going to be in his first season in NA hockey and you have him on the first line?
He’s starting in Hartford, will be a December call up.
Yes I do!! He’s 22, alraedy tore up the MoDo league, which from what I understand is much better than an AHL team could even offer up. He’s also proved himself on the olympic level and Forsberg has already publicly said this kid can compete at the NHL level. I think people said the same thing about DelZotto and he was out there. My prediction is that he will center the first line out of training camp.
