Rangers Re-Sign Dan Girardi
Well, just hours after the post about what Dan Girardi (and Marc Staal) should be getting in a deal, the Rangers inked Dan Girardi to a four year contract for $13.3 million, which averages out to a $3.325 million cap hit. In the post below, I said that Girardi is going to get around $3 million, +/- $500,000, so I’m going to pat myself on the back for that one.
Girardi’s contract locks up a key cog on the Rangers blue line for four years, until Girardi turns 30. By signing Girardi to a multi-year contract, the Rangers avoid arbitration with Girardi, where he was sure to get this dollar amount for a single season. Also, by signing the multi-year deal, the Rangers keep Girardi under contract for three of his prime UFA years. This is a solid deal for Girardi, who gets a bad rap because of the Philly brain-fart. Girardi is easily a top-four defenseman on this team, and about 25 other NHL teams.
Now, just lock up Marc Staal please.

Good deal. Of course, I would have liked to see the AAV a little lower, but locking up a solid top 4 defenseman for the next 4 years is a great thing.

Would it have been nice to see it lower? Yes, but it’s not much more than I expected, and right in line with what I thought he could get. Solid deal for both sides, as Girardi would have been much more expensive as a UFA.

With initial projections for Girardi and Staal at approx 2.75M and 3.75M last week, I wonder how high Sather will go with Staal now?
Girardi signing seams justified by stats;
Staal ?
Remember there was “a chasm” just last week

I think Staal gets $4.5-$4.75 million on a four year deal (leaving him a RFA at the end of the deal). Anything longer than 4 years means he’s a UFA at the end.

if staal gets that they were both a little overpaid but we could live with it if the talk is true about redden.it will still leave us with wiggle room i think 4 would be fair for staal.

Overpayment by a little, but worth it for them.

Solid contract – Girardi is 26 so it buys out the first 3 years of his eligibility to become an UFA.

just did the numbers on capgeek if we sign staal at 4.5 that brings us to 1,590,833 left in cap and if they drop voros, boyle and redden to the minors in which i agree with dave is all a rumor right now with redden that leaves us 8,090,833 in cap space with another 1.4 mill added if we can get a sucker for brashear.we still need a defencemen maybe mcdonagh for 1,300,000 cap hit.which would still leave us around 7,215,833 or 8,615,833 if we lose brashear. and that leaves one foward spot to be filled.

I was thinking that would be a steal relative to Redden signing but here’s Redden’s numbers for the 3 yrs before he signed;
Games/yr 70
Cumulative +/- +47
Pts/yr 41
ATOI 22.61
Salary 6.5M
Maybe these numbers warranted 5.5M? Staal at 4.75M is a good deal.

Rangers trade for Eminger…
I like the move… Young Dman but he is a pro… 1st rounder in 2002 and we gave up relatively nothing

Waive goodbye Wade.
They will buy him out; it would look terrible to other potential UFA’s to bury Redden in Hartford for four years (Rissmiller and Brash not withstanding).
I also think Gilroy will start the season in NY but will end it somewhere else. I wasn’t that impressed with him (even before he hit the rookie NCAA wall)..
D next year:
1) Staal (yes, they will sign him)/Girardi
2) Rosival/Emminger
3) Ryan Mcd/MDZ
Gilroy starts as seventh man and ends up somewhere else in a trade mid season..

Highly unlikely they buy him out, that cap hit is just horrible for eight years. Plus, they wouldn’t be able to do it until next June.

Also-no need to get a topline center (assuming the young kids are ready to play;). Leave spots for Stepan, Grachev, and some of the others. Of course if they aren’t ready, send to Hartford, and with the cap space from waiving Redden, try and grab Brad Richards for one year (I think he has one year left at $7.5 but I could be wrong). We have an extra 2nd round pick to use as well for a trade..

QUESTION- if the rangers do not get Kovalchuk, which is a good possibility but I think Glen Sather is trying to make it happen; would Simon Gagne be a good fit for the rangers? Maybe trade Donald Brashear for Gagne. Simon’s salary would terminate at the end of the season, which would most likely be used to pay Cally and Dubi. I would like to hear some peoples spin on the situation.

Gagne is a good fit for one year..But would Philly trade him to a division rival? doubtful..
