Ryan McDonagh, Pavel Valentenko Cut
The Rangers have made their first cuts of the day, sending defensemen Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko to the Hartford Wolfpack of the AHL. For all intents and purposes, Mike Sauer and Steve Eminger have made the club as the sixth and seventh defensemen, respectively. McDonagh and Valentenko did not have to clear waivers, which may have been a determining factor in the decision. With McDonagh needing consistent playing time, there was no need to keep him as the seventh defensemen, who will likely sit in the press box for the majority of the season.
Dale Weise and Mats Zuccarello-Aasen have also been returned to Hartford.
Update 2:45pm: With Vinny Prospal and Chris Drury starting the season on injured reserve, the Rangers do not need to make anymore cuts at the forward position. There will be at least two cuts when both return from injury.

Congrats to Sauer for earning a spot. He is a R-handed shot – will he play on the L side of Gilroy on the 3rd unit?
I do think Eminger is the best fit as a 7th. I’d have to think that they are at least considering moving Rozi at this point.
I get the feeling that Prospal’s knee will sideline for more than two weeks and he will be in and out of the lineup several times this year because of it. Despite the two goals last night I still can’t see White making the squad – he’s small, has no physical element to his game at all and due to his age won’t be in the Rangers plans beyond this year regardless. Rangers are probably just buying time as they plan to move him.
It looks like Drury and Prospal will start on IR, so no forward cuts will be made.
now just get rid of white and christensen, both are useless to us .
White and Kennedy are my predictions for cuts.
rather have kennedy than christensen dont see the big deal with this guy.
The coaching staff seems to love him, so I think he stays. I don’t care if he stays or goes though.
