The Rangers have called up RW Dale Weise. This is Weise’s first ever call up to the NHL. In 73 games this season with the Wolfpack, Weise has put together a line of 28-21-49 with 114 PIMs. According to Mitch Beck of Howlings.net, Weise is one of the players on the Hartford roster that is NHL ready. To make room on the roster, center Corey Locke was re-assigned to the AHL. In his three game call up, Locke was held off the scoreboard and finished with a +1 rating.
Following the trade deadline, NHL clubs are allowed a maximum of four call ups until the end of the season. With Weise’s call up, the Rangers will not be allowed to make any more call ups for the rest of the season. This includes players like Locke who were called up and then sent back down.
Well Rangers fans, you got your wish. Corey Locke has been recalled by the Rangers, as per the AHL transaction log. Locke will likely skate in place of the injured Sean Avery, who injured his leg in an attempt to beat out an icing call against Toronto on Saturday. Locke has pretty numbers in the AHL, but there is a reason why he has only seen one professional game in his entire career. Numbers aren’t everything.
The Rangers have called up P.A. Parenteau and Anders Eriksson from the AHL, for Saturday’s game against Toronto. The Parenteau call-up is presumably for Ryan Callahan, who re-injured his leg against the Devils.
As for Eriksson, there are a couple potential reasons for the call-up. The Rangers may want a seventh defenseman for the rest of the road trip (which would be odd, since they haven’t carried seven all year). Or, it may be to replace Matt Gilroy, who played only 10:05 in the shootout win against the Devils. Do the Rangers want a veteran presence for the last playoff push? We’ll see what happens.
As the trade deadline has passed, there is some non-trade news. Corey Potter was returned to Hartford, as Michael Del Zotto will play tomorrow against Pittsburgh. Also, Marian Gaborik did not practice today. Unless he partakes in tomorrow’s morning skate, assume he will not be in the lineup against the Penguins.
Corey Potter has been recalled from Hartford, presumably to play in Ottawa
in case Michael Del Zotto cannot due to his injury. Potter, 26, has a line of 2-11-13 and +5 in 51 games for Hartford this season.
Miika Wiikman called up for the day, Chad Johnson returned to Hartford, presumably to get some playing time in. This is as per CapGeek.
Yawn.
Chad Johnson is back with the Rangers, who resumed practice today. Steve Valliquette has been sent back to Hartford, in the 132nd round of the 2010 Great Goalie Shuffle.
Bit of housekeeping here: Rangers have called up Steve Valliquette from Hartford. This move is to allow Matt Zaba to play in Hartford over the break. Vally has a broken finger, but NHL rules require two goalies on the active roster. Once the break ends, I’d assume that the Great Goalie Shuffle continues.
With Michael Del Zotto likely to miss Sundays tilt against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday I can”t help feeling the Rangers missed a chance. Would it hurt their already fading payoff chances if they had another look at Bobby Sanguinetti? Surely the young offensive blueliner is a bigger part of the Rangers future than 25 year old Potter so a game at the MSG would be more chance to see what he can do. Right now the Rangers need to analyse what they have got going forward. I cant help feeling that Potters time would have already come by now IF it was going to come….
Im willing to admit im wrong about last night. A great gutsy victory by the Rangers.
On Olympic news. Do you think The King can take the Swedes to more Olympic glory? I wrote an article at nasports.co.uk where we discussed the Swedish entry. I think once they get to the medal round (yes, they will get there) Henrik has the ability to make the difference. They werent expected to get gold last time and arent this time. It may be playing exactly into their and Henrik’s hands.
However…. thinking Rangers… do we really want Sweden to go far?!
Corey Potter is back in Hartford. After one game, Potter was sent back down to Hartford. Goalie Chad Johnson is back in Hartford as part of the Great Goalie Shuffle of 2010, and Matt Zaba is up. I have no idea why Potter was called up. Which defenseman was banged up?
