Steven Fogarty (2011 3rd) and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated Boo Nieves (2012 2nd) and the Michigan Wolverines by a score of 3-1 in the final CCHA Championship game. The loss ends Michigan’s season, as they needed to win the CCHA and earn the automatic bid to quality for the Frozen Four. With the loss, Yale takes the final at-large big. Both Nieves and Fogarty were scoreless in the contest.

The CCHA Finals (Today, 2:05pm on MSG+) will have two Ranger prospects squaring off, as Boo Nieves’ (2012, 2nd) Michigan Wolverines will face Steven Fogarty’s (2011, 3rd) Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Michigan knocked off Miami of Ohio in the semi-finals, while Notre Dame took out Ohio State. Michigan needed a deep run in the CCHA tournament to qualify for the Frozen Four, and may even need to win this game to seal their bid. Both Nieves and Fogarty were held off the scoreboard in their team’s wins.
The contest will be televised, so check your local listings. The game is on Fox Sports Detroit, but it wouldn’t shock me if it’s simulcast on another channel for the east coast.

Brady Skjei’s Minnesota Golden Gophers were stunned by lowly Colorado College in the WCHA Final Five last night, losing by a score of 2-0. The loss eliminates the Gophers from the WCHA playoffs, and prevents Minnesota from getting an automatic bid to the Frozen Four. As the top team in the country, Minnesota will get an at-large bid, but they likely will not receive the top seed in the tournament. Interestingly enough, Skjei was a healthy scratch for the game.
The playoffs began for all Rangers prospects (aside from the AHL), so be sure to check their progress after the jump.

Jesper Fasth’s season in the SEL came to an end yesterday, dropping Game Five of their first round series to Linkopings by a score of 6-1. Linkopings, the 7th seed in the playoffs, won the series 4-1 over Fasth’s 2nd seeded HV71. In the previous ATF, we noted that Fasth would become an option for the Rangers if HV71 were to lose. Fasth is already signed to an ELC, and it is no secret that the Rangers are trying to get their two Swedes (Fasth and Oscar Lindberg) over to the US. I believe Fasth still has one year left on his deal with HV71, so that might be a minor hiccup.

Jesper Fasth was held scoreless (with 0 PIMs and an even rating) and as HV71 dropped Game Four of their series with Linkopings, and now trail the series 3-1. Fasth left the game early due to an undisclosed injury. Per Alex Nunn –who you should be following if you are into Swedish hockey, including updates on Fasth and Oscar Lindberg– Gordie Clarke and Anders Hedberg were in attendance to watch Fasth.
Fasth, the only prospect in action last night, is already signed to an ELC. He may become available to the Rangers after Thursday, should his HV71 squad drop Game Five and the series.
Oscar Lindberg was the only prospect in action last night, and he contributed a goal and an assist in Skelleftea’s 4-0 win over Brynas. The win also completed Skelleftea’s sweep, advancing them to the second round of the SEL playoffs. Lindberg also had 4 PIMs and a +1 rating. In the series, Lindberg had a line of 1-5-6 and a +4 rating in the four game sweep.
Peter Ceresnak now holds the dubious distinction of being the only Rangers prospect to miss the playoffs in his respective league. Ceresnak, a member of the OHL’s Peterborough Petes, lost their final game of the season last night to Brampton by a score of 5-2. The Petes missed the playoffs by a single point, and are one of four teams in the OHL to miss the playoffs. Ceresnak did notch an assist in the contest.
The 2011 6th round pick must be signed by the Rangers by June 1 of this year for the organization to retain his rights. As of now, it does not appear that the Rangers will sign Ceresnak, who played in 56 of Peterborough’s 68 games and contributed a scoring line of 3-9-12 and a -13 rating. The 6’3″, 202 lb defenseman is a right-handed shot, which may work in his favor. However, with a poor season and a poor WJC, Ceresnak may be on the outside looking in.

I had eye surgery on Friday, so I was unable to get the ATF yesterday. This post will cover all games played by the Rangers prospects on Thursday night and Friday night. Today’s (Saturday’s) games will be covered tomorrow, as per usual.
The playoffs –or playoff type scenarios– have begun for almost all of the Rangers prospects. Oscar Lindberg and Jesper Fasth have begun their first round series in Sweden. The NCAA conference tournaments have begun, with Brady Skjei (Minnesota), Boo Nieves (Michigan), and Steven Fogarty (Notre Dame) all winning their first games. Michael St. Croix (Edmonton), Shane McColgan, and Josh Nicholls (both with Saskatoon) have clinched playoff berths in the WHL. Sam Noreau’s Baie-Comeau has clinched a playoff berth in the QMJHL. Finally, Peter Ceresnak’s Peterborough of the OHL control their own destiny for the final playoff berth.
