Bit of housekeeping here: Rangers have called up Steve Valliquette from Hartford. This move is to allow Matt Zaba to play in Hartford over the break. Vally has a broken finger, but NHL rules require two goalies on the active roster. Once the break ends, I’d assume that the Great Goalie Shuffle continues.

I think I’m just going to copy and paste this post, and the Johnson Down/Zaba Up post, every time it happens. But hey, the great goalie shuffle of 2009-2010 continues.
Think the Rangers pay for their gas?
Chad Johnson is on his way back to Hartford to play in a few games, and Matt Zaba is being called back up to serve as Henrik Lundqvist’s backup during the trips to Philly and Montreal.
How long is the train ride from NY to Hartford? Think they drive? Car service? I smell a poll (on Twitter)…
The Great Goalie Shuffle of 2010 continues, with Chad Johnson being sent down to Hartford, and Matt Zaba being called up to the big time. Of course, Johnson is just getting playing time, and I would be shocked if Zaba actually plays. Still, this shuffle can’t be good for Johnson or the team. Johnson has shown he can play at the NHL-level. Shouldn’t they just keep him up?
Chad Johnson has been called back up from Hartford, and Matt Zaba has been sent back to Hartford. This was expected, and announced during the game last night. It’s official now. Johnson was down to get some work in, and you can expect the revolving door of backups to continue until the Rangers get a capable backup.
Chad Johnson’s brief stay with the Rangers has ended, as he has been sent down to Hartford to get some more playing time. Matt Zaba has been recalled to backup Henrik Lundqvist for the time being.
There seems to be a rotation of backups going right now. Backup Lundqvist for a week, get sent back down to get playing time, and repeat. The Rangers really need to get a backup goalie, and fast.
The Great Goalie Shuffle of 2009 continues: Rangers sent down Matt Zaba and recalled Chad Johnson, according to Andrew Gross. Johnson started last night against Portland, and gave up 4 goals on 29 shots in a 5-2 loss. Gross is also reporting that Enver Lisin and Aaron Voros will be healthy scratches for tonight’s game against Buffalo. We shall see what happens.
The Rangers made two moves today, one surprising, the other expected. The first, was sending Matt Gilroy down to Hartford. They kept Ilkka Heikkinen up. I don’t get it. Honestly, I thought Gilroy has been one of our best defenseman all year. He had a bad game against Chicago, but so did Rosival, and everyone else. I would have preferred to see Rosy sent down, or even Girardi. I don’t get it. If it’s a message, I think it’s a wrong one. Gilroy has been great all year. One bad game, and he’s in Hartford. Don’t get it.
The second move was sending goalie Chad Johnson down to Hartford. This is just to get him some extra work. Matt Zaba was called up as the backup for the Saturday game against Buffalo. Hartford has a bunch of games coming up, so he can get work. I still think the Rangers need to get a NHL caliber backup.
What’s your thoughts on the Gilroy move? Since the move does save some cap room, is there another one on the way?
This is relatively old news, but it’s something we haven’t mentioned yet. The Rangers have agreed to terms with Hartford Wolfpack goalie Matt Zaba. Zaba will be in Hartford next year as well, but this signing probably means that he will be the 3rd string goalie. Should something happen to both Hank and Vally, Zaba will be the Rangers starting goalie…..scary. But for now, he’s in Hartford.
